The Imo State government has announced its commitment to implement the National Judicial Council’s (NJC) recommendation to appoint the state’s most senior judge as Acting Chief Judge, reversing the earlier appointment of Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu.

Following its 108th meeting, the NJC directed Governor Hope Uzodinma to replace Justice Nzeukwu, who was appointed Acting Chief Judge, with the most senior judicial officer in the state. The directive was issued to ensure compliance with judicial appointment protocols.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, the government expressed respect for the NJC’s constitutional advisory role in judicial matters. The statement clarified that Governor Uzodinma appointed Justice Nzeukwu based on credible reports indicating he was the most senior judge without unresolved issues at the time.

“The appointment was made in good faith and within legal bounds,” Emelumba stated. “However, in line with our respect for due process and the judiciary, the government will comply with the NJC’s recommendation.”
