The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has concluded plans to hold its 2021 Mandatory Continuous Professional Development workshop on sustainable building services.

The NIOB said in a statement that it recognises the critical role of building services in providing comfort and utility to users and occupants, hence the need to address stability, functionality, economy and utility as key variables of user experience in a completed building.

According to the institute, quality planning and expertise in the assembly of components contribute to the lifetime performance of a building.

The President of the NIOB, Kunle Awobodu, said stories of leaking pipes, odour from improperly ventilated systems, poor installation of systems disruption in building utility could be attributed to poor workmanship.

“The NIOB is set to address these and several issues from first principles in the workshop,” he said.
The workshop, which would be both physical and virtual with the theme, ‘Sustainable building services practices in Nigeria: Enhancing performance and user satisfaction’ is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, May 26 and Thursday, May 27, 2021.

It also has as its sub-themes, ‘Effects of design and material selection on building services systems performance and maintenance’, ‘Addressing materials and workmanship challenges in building services installation’ and ‘Early stage defects and their effects on costs of operation and maintenance’

Other sub-themes are ‘Reliability, breakdowns and lifespan of building services systems; ‘The challenges of building services design and installation practice in Nigeria’; and ‘Health and safety considerations in building services installation practice’.

Eminent and experienced industry practitioners and researchers will serve as resource persons at the workshop.
The resource persons include a former Governor of Ogun State and a renowned engineer, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Prof. Ikemefuna Mbamali of the Department of Building, Ahmadu Bello University; and a professor of construction management, Summerstrand North Campus of the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, John Smallwood.

Other resource persons are Dr. Nkeleme Emmanuel Ifeanyichukwu, a post- doctoral fellow of the Department of Construction Management, Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Dr. Buhari Mohammed Manzuma, a senior lecturer at the Department of Building, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Professor of Construction Management, University of Cape Town, South Africa, Abimbola Windapo; and the immediate past Chairperson, Women Association of Quantity Surveyors in Nigeria, Mrs. Aderonke Oyelami.
